Yale Club of Shenzhen

Reconnecting with Nature at the Urban Edge

In a fast-paced city like Shenzhen, we rarely have the chance to truly pause and see what it looked like "in its original form."

This year's Yale Day of Service, the Yale Club of Shenzhen wants to do something a little different—

Step into nature.

●●●

A Protected "Urban Edge"

We will visit together the Shenzhen Mangrove Conservation Area (Neilingding Reserve).

This is one of the few areas in Shenzhen that still preserves a pristine wetland ecosystem. Mangroves are not only vital habitats for migratory birds, but also crucial barriers protecting coastlines and maintaining the city's ecological balance.

They exist quietly, yet have always been "working" for this city.

But precisely because of this—the area is not open to the public.

As an ecologically sensitive area, entering the reserve requires border security and relevant approvals, with almost no opportunities for public access under normal circumstances.

This is what makes this visit particularly rare and valuable.

A More "Contemplative" YDoS

Compared to our past service activities—beach cleanups, nursing home visits, spending time with special needs children...

This time, we've chosen a "slower" approach.

No task lists, no output metrics, just stepping into nature and, with expert guidance, genuinely learning:

How are mangroves formed?

How do they impact urban ecology?

Amid rapid urbanization, how have these ecosystems been preserved?

This is more like an experience about understanding and connection.

Who Will Join Us?

This will be a small-scale alumni gathering.

We hope to create a relaxed, pressure-free environment where we can walk together, talk about life, and discuss the relationship between city and nature.

It may also be perfect to bring your children, to let them see the world beyond textbooks.
